About Catoctin Studio

Located in Frederick Maryland, Catotctin Studio is a 15 minute walk from beautiful old-town Frederick and about 5 minutes from historic Baker Park. It is a private studio of moderate size where all students receive their instruction from Mr. and Mrs. Stapp.

Students become grounded in   the musical life of the community  and are encouraged to attend professional concerts. Catoctin Studio holds two student solo recitals and two chamber music recitals a year. Performance classes and chamber music coachings are offered each semester. Catoctin Studio students have won big scholarships at schools such as Towson and WVU and have been accepted at Indiana University and the Eastman School of Music.


Approach

The last several centuries have seen great teachers and performers. Genius has come unexpectedly and from diverse sources. We are led to believe that its source is not fundamentaly dogma, but authentic knowledge. Authentic knowledge is the inherent ability we are born with. It must be quided and shaped by the teacher through a thoughtful application of fundamentals.

Our understanding is inspired by the teachers and performers that precede us. This, combined with an awareness of authentic knowledge leads the teacher and student on a logical journey. Based upon individual differences, a natural and authentic technique can have traits of more than one school of teaching. The biggest mistake would be to let the interpretation of a ‘rule’ impede natural function and clear thinking.

Closings

Closings will be posted on this website in the *Weather Cancellations* box on the left side of this page. In the case of inclement weather Catoctin Studio may follow the decisions of the schools. However, if weather conditions improve during the day, lessons may go on as scheduled. Snow days are made-up at the end of the spring semester.
