Approach
In addition to two degrees in violin/viola performance, William Stapp has a degree in violinmaking from Indiana University. Mr. Stapp has had the opportunity to play, measure, and scrutinize Cremonese violins and violas by such makers as Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesu, and the Amatis. Over time, he has developed an approach to the design and construction of new instruments. He does not believe in copying individual instruments. Every part of his instrument’s design derives from a central geometric scheme. The result is that the instruments are true to themselves. Stapp does not give clients a choice of models; he uses the design that has proven superior acoustically. Therefore, he believes a discussion of orchestral, chamber, or solo qualities may not be logical. Mr. Stapp has had success with North American and European woods as each can have superior acoustics. Every stage of the woodworking is carefully controlled by hand to ensure the highest tolerances and stability. He completes a select number of concert quality instruments each year.
